Completed Coursework at MSU
Below you will find a list of the classes I took at Michigan State to complete my Master's of Art in Education. My areas of concentration are Sport Leadership & Coaching and P-12 School and Post-secondary Leadership. Included, you will find a sample of my work for each of my classes.
Spring 2010EAD 800 Educational Inquiry Dr. Steven Weiland Grade: 4.00 This was my very first course for the Master's program. It served as a foundational class that allowed us to explore, think and exchange ideas on our beliefs about education and the many forms of inquiry related to it. It was a great class to kick off the program and get us thinking about education. I learned a lot from the many books and resources from this class. The paper attached here is from our unit exploring the book by Mary Catherine Bateson, Peripheral Visions.
| SKIN 854 Sport Law for Administrators & Coaches Rick Atkinson Grade: 4.00 The focus of this course was to prepare us for the responsibilities associated with providing and maintaining educationally sound athletic programs for amateur athletes. Here we learned about the risks associated with participation in physical activities and consequences of failing to protect the welfare of those who participate. This assignment was in the section of specific areas of responsibility for the coach. This paper is a letter directed towards the athletes and parents about rules and issues with hazing.

Summer 2010EAD 801 Leadership and Organizational Development Gerald Jennings Grade: 4.00 This course explored many types of leadership. It used educational contexts to help understand leadership, the influences of formal and informal leaders, leadership as actions and leadership strategy as it applies to school, work and our everyday lives. Attached you will find my final paper for the course. It is my leadership analysis, covering what I learned over the semester course.
| KKIN 856 Physical Bases of Coaching Scott Riewald Grade: 4.00 The objectives of this course were to provide coaches, athletic administrators, and directors of recreational programs with principles of anatomy, physiology, sports medicine, and bio mechanics as a foundation for coaching amateur athletes in various sports. We learned from all areas on the physical aspects of coaching and working with athletes. For this assignment, we were asked to describe a movement. As a former volleyball player, I chose to describe how to serve a volleyball.

Fall 2010KIN 855 Psychosocial Bases of Coaching Dr. Marty Ewing Grade: 4.00 After learning about the physical bases of coaching, I found it important to also learn about the psychosocial bases of coaching too. This class covered sociological, psychological, philosophical, developmental and instructional principles for coaching athletes in competitive sports. This served as a great perspective on coaching, as often we don't think about this of it side. This class required us to create a coaching philosophy. You can find mine by clicking the document below.
| KKIN 857 Promoting Positive Youth Development through Sport Dr. Dan Gould Grade: 4.00 Here I got a better understanding of ways to facilitate positive youth and student-athlete development through sport. The course focused on scientific bases and policy implications for educational athletics in all environments. For our final project we had to create a program proposal. I created a pilot after school program for elementary students. You can view the full proposal below.

Spring 2011EAD 860 Concept of a Learning Society Dr. Steve Weiland Grade: 4.00 Here our focus was on the "learning society." We really explored the developments of education across the life span and how it is used to guide us in our educational goals, actvitities, and plans for the future. We also looked at the experiences and views of individuals working and living within the learning society. The document here is the final paper we wrote covering the unit on Hamlet's Blackberry by William Powers. This essay explores the development in globalization and technology and how it relates to us in our everyday lives.
| sEAD 876 Budget and Finance in Higher Education Patricia Farrell Grade: 4.00 The purpose of this class was to cover fundamentals of higher education finance. We learned about the private and public benefits, the cost of higher education, the role of the federal government in financing higher education among other implications of various financing strategies. This class was a real eye opener presenting information that I was not aware of. Below you will find our final project, a research paper on a topic of our choice. I chose to do mine on lotteries and gambling and education.

Summer 2011TE 831 Teaching School Matter with Technology Eric Byker Grade: 4.00 Having little formal education or training with technology, I thought that this would be a great class to add to my program. Here we really explored the many different technology tools available and how to incoporate them into a classroom setting. Below you will see the YouTube video I created for our digital storytelling assignment. This video teaches you how to properly refuel your body after exercise. | CED 870 Capstone Seminar Dr. Matthew Koehler Grade: 4.00 This capstone seminar serves as my final course for the Master's program.
